Andrographis paniculata extract comes from a plant known as Andrographis, native to South Asian countries like India and Sri Lanka. It’s widely used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, for its purported health benefits.

Andrographis paniculata extract

Andrographolide is a major bioactive compound found in the Andrographis paniculata plant. It’s known for its potent pharmacological properties and has been extensively studied for its medicinal benefits. CAS: 5508-58-7, Quality herb Andrographolide list: 5% 10% 20% 50% 98% HPLC

Andrographolide

Andrographis paniculata extract is believed to have several medicinal properties, including:

  • Immune Support: It is often used to support the immune system, especially during times of cold and flu.
  • Anti-inflammatory: It has anti-inflammatory properties and is used to alleviate symptoms of inflammatory conditions.
  • Antioxidant: It contains compounds that act as antioxidants, which may help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.
  • Digestive Health: It is sometimes used to promote digestive health and relieve digestive issues.
  • Antimicrobial: It has shown some antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria and viruses.

Dosage:

It is recommended to take 200-300 mg of andrographolide in 2-3 divided doses to alleviate cold and fever symptoms. High doses of 1000 to 2000 mg per day have been used in some studies. Andrographis is typically standardized to contain 4-6% andrographolide.

Safety:

An acute toxicity study reported a high LD50 value for Andrographis, rendering it undetectable. A chronic toxicity study in dogs showed no pathological changes after administering andrographolide at 15 times the clinical dose. While concerns about its contraceptive activity have risen in animal experiments, no adverse effects have been found in human studies of andrographolide. In one study, participants’ liver function, blood cell counts, kidney function, and other toxicity markers were monitored without any issues detected.

Chemical Components:

Despite two Chinese publications listing a wide range of additional compounds, the primary active ingredient in Andrographis remains andrographolide. Other components aside from andrographolide include neoandrographolide; andrographolide A, B, and C; 14-deoxy-11,12-didehydroandrographolide; and 14-deoxyandrographolide.

Function:

treatment for high cholesterol, cancer, heart disease, and viral upper respiratory tract infection

Applications:

food, beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetics

The extract is typically derived from the leaves and stems of the Andrographis plant and is available in various forms such as capsules, tablets, and liquid extracts. It’s important to note that while Andrographis paniculata extract is widely used and researched in traditional medicine, more scientific studies are needed to understand its efficacy and safety profile fully.
