Mucuna pruriens is a plant from India, the Caribbean, or Africa. It is a climbing shrub that can grow white, lavender, or purple flowers and causes itching upon physical contact with the outer hairs and skin. Like most herbal supplements, it possesses anti-oxidant content.
Mucuna Pruriens, or Velvet Bean, is a bean that grows from trees and is very itchy to the touch due to serotonin on its surface. It is a good source of L-DOPA and contains some other molecules that may aid the benefits of L-DOPA. The other psychoactive in Mucuna is dosed too low to be relevant.
Mucuna Seed Extract L-DOPA (L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine; INN levodopa; trade names Sinemet, Parcopa, Atamet, Stalevo, Madopar, Prolopa, etc.) is a naturally occurring dietary supplement and psychoactive drug found in certain kinds of food and herbs (e.g., Mucuna Pruriens, or velvet bean), and is synthesized from the amino acid L-tyrosine in the mammalian body and brain.
Mucuna Seed Extract L-DOPA is the precursor to the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and epinephrine (adrenaline) collectively known as catecholamines.
Aside from its natural and essential biological role, L-DOPA is also used in the clinical treatment of Parkinson’s disease and dopamine-responsive dystonia. When used in a pharmaceutical context, the INN designation ‘levodopa’ is normally used.
